Stations of The Cross

Around the walls of the church are the 14 stations of the cross - the first and last (14th) station from Hythe Catholic Church are pictured here. This series of pictures is also known as 'The Way of the Cross'. There are 14 'stations' representing scenes from The Passion of Christ. This is a traditional form of prayer. In recent times many people have been reminded of these events in the film, "The Passion of The Christ".

The Stations are as follows:

1. Christ is condemned to death;
2. The cross is laid upon Him;
3. His first fall;
4. He meets His Blessed Mother;
5. Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross;
6. Christ's face is wiped by Veronica;
7. His second fall;
8. He meets the women of Jerusalem;
9. His third fall;
10. He is stripped of His garments;
11. His crucifixion;
12. His death on the cross;
13. His body is taken down from the cross;
14. His body is laid in the tomb.

The purpose of the Stations is to help us make a spiritual journey, focusing on scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. It is carried out by passing from Station to Station, with prayers at each and meditation on the events. There are many different versions of accompanying prayers and meditations. It is traditional to sing a verse at each station of the "Stabat Mater".

During Lent we come together and join in a public meditation on The Stations of The Cross on Friday evenings in our Hythe Church at 7.00pm (except Good Friday when we observe the Lord's Passion at 3.00pm.)
