Youth & Children - Catholic Hythe
Growing up as disciples of Jesus Christ
At Catholic Hythe we hope our children will mature into young adults who are disciples of Jesus Christ. We want to:
- Nurture in young people their relationship with God:
- Integrate young people into the life and mission of The Catholic Church;
- Assist young people to live their faith in the world.
As they look out towards the future, we want our young people to have something better than the world's false idea of freedom. By supporting families and offering specific activities for our young people, such as the 'Children's Liturgy of the Word', 'Young Families Group', 'Youth 2000' and 'Youth Group', we aim to assist our young people to love Christ and bring others to Him. We want to nurture in our young, a deep love and understanding of the fullness of truth as found in the Catholic Church. We hope they will have a profoundly Christian interior life and draw strength from active participation in the sacramental life of The Church. We aim to foster in them a deep appreciation of the Eucharist as "the source and summit of the Christian life" (Lumen Gentium, Vatican II.)
The first message of Benedict XVI to young people was :"Dear young people: Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything."
At Catholic Hythe we embrace this message and want our Youth to know that Jesus Christ is
"The Way, The Truth and The Life" (John 14:6) - and that this
"truth will make you free". (John 8:32)
We promote discussion and sharing of personal faith and experience amongst our families and their children. However, we do not base our work just on personal points of view. We encourage age appropriate drawing on the teachings of the Church, on the Scriptures, the Catechism and papal encyclicals.
About our Children's Liturgy
At the 09.30 Sunday Mass at Hythe, there is a 'Children's Liturgy of the Word' for younger children who leave the congregation and gather elsewhere to celebrate a Liturgy of the Word, more appropriate to their level of understanding. This follows the 1973 Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome, Directory for Masses with Children. This document offers principles and guidelines for adapting the liturgy for children to enable them to take a more conscious and active part in liturgical celebrations. The Directory states: "Sometimes..., if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the liturgy of the word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant, room. Then, before the eucharistic liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word"
The Children's Liturgy of the Word is just for younger children who join the rest of the congregation for all other parts of the Mass. As the Directory (see above) says, "In addition, it is essential to embody the unity of a church which includes children as well as adults and to lead children to an adult participation in the parish Sunday Mass."
